Recently, a handful of VanMoof riders have been stopped and penalized by local authorities in European cities. This is because our app allows you to change to a different region setting, and potentially allows for a higher assisted support speed than local laws allow. Even if riders are using the correct setting, the option to switch region modes is problematic for certain authorities.

After consultation with the authorities involved, we’ve decided to introduce a software change that removes the option to switch region settings in the app.

This change will take effect with an app update on November 17. This applies to all VanMoof e-bike riders (with version 3.5 of the iOS app and version 5.5.0 of the Android app), and you will be notified inside the updated app. All VanMoof e-bikes released since 2016 (starting with the Electrified S and X) will be updated to comply with local laws and regulations.

If you are not riding with the correct region setting, you need to tap the ‘reset region settings’ button when you receive the app update. You’ll find this on the settings tab of the updated app, as shown here. This will ensure you comply with local laws and regulations.

If you've sold or passed your bike on, please forward this email to the new owner or let us know about the change in ownership.

We know this change will be frustrating for some of you, and we appreciate your understanding. We’re confident that as e-bike use continues to grow worldwide, current laws and regulations will be updated to give riders greater freedom.
